In some respects, I'm very good at introspection, e.g. alpha-beta.
Humans are much worse at introspection than we imagine, and a lot
of what we know is learned, especially from literature. The man
who claimed that consciousness was invented between the Iliad and
the Odyssey was mainly wrong. Putting consciousness into literature
was discovered in that interval. However, this in turn had a
substantial effect on the forms that consciousness takes.
As Marguerite Yourcenar remarks in the notes to both "The Abyss" and
"The Memoirs of Hadrian" the consciousness of women has less literary
and historical expression than that of men, so that even women are
in some respects more familiar with the consciousness of men than with
that of women.
The years of wishful thinking.
The two lies.
An externally uneventful life can nevertheless be interesting if the
development of consciousness can be told well.
